Your memory, your machine
claude-mem is local-first. This page explains what stays on your device, what cloud sync stores when you opt in, and how to reach us.
Local-first by default. When you install claude-mem, your observations and memory live in a SQLite database on your own machine. Nothing leaves your device unless you explicitly turn on cloud sync. Privacy stripping is applied as memory is generated, so sensitive details are filtered before they are stored.
Cloud sync is opt-in. cmem cloud is an optional service. If you enable it, cloud sync stores the observations you choose to sync and the metadata needed to serve them back to you through your private MCP link — for example, your account email and the sync state of your devices. We do not sell your data, and we do not use the content of your memory to train models.
Screenshots and images. When image capture is on in claude-mem, it keeps converted copies of the screenshots and other images your coding tools read or produce, not the original files: a full-size WebP copy you can view and a smaller copy for the observer model, with embedded metadata such as location removed. On your computer, an image is kept until the session it came from and every memory that uses it have been deleted. With cloud sync on, the copies are also uploaded to private storage tied to your account (up to 256 MiB), never behind a public link. They can be read when you are signed in, by your devices’ setup token, and by anyone who has your MCP link. An uploaded image is kept, with no time limit, until the computer that uploaded it deletes it or you delete your account; claude-mem deletes the cloud copy once nothing on that computer uses the image any more. When your stored images reach the 256 MiB limit, new images are not uploaded: they stay on your computer, and claude-mem tries the upload again later. Deleting your account deletes every stored image, and removal from storage finishes in the background. Images are not sent to any AI model unless image inference is turned on, and it is off by default. When it is on, the smaller copy is sent with the request to the provider of the observer model (through OpenRouter for cmem.ai’s observer) so it can write the memory. To run the service we record image sizes, dimensions, formats and processing times, never the image content, file paths or captions.
Your MCP link. Your MCP link is a personal, secret URL. Treat it like a password: anyone who has it can read the memory you have synced. You can request a new link at any time.
Deleting your account. Sign in, open Account, and choose “Delete account & data”. This erases your account and the cloud data we hold for it across our systems. It does not reach copies on your own devices — the local claude-mem database and the phone app — which you can remove yourself. Billing records are retained for tax and legal reasons, and refunds are handled by support. Deletion of analytics events is queued and completes within days.
